FCC Austria Abfall Service AG takes care of cleanliness along A2 highway

autobahn

With a length of 377.3 km, the “Südautobahn” A2 ('South Motorway'), is the longest motorway in Austria. It runs south, from the outskirts of Vienna via the cities of Graz and Klagenfurt, to the border of Italy at Arnoldstein, where it joins the “Autostrada A23”.

Thanks to its location, the A2 motorway - connecting the north and south of Europe - is a popular transfer road for many. Based on the ASFINAG* data from 2017, more than 26,000 vehicles travelled the A2 highway every day. Of course, in the summer holiday season the traffic density is much higher, as the A2 highway is a very popular corridor for Czech, Slovak and Polish tourists to reach the Adriatic Sea.

Such a large amount of traffic can bring some adverse effects, among others, in the form of a large amount of waste that drivers and passengers generate during their journey. In 2017 alone, more than 670 tons of residual waste were produced, of which around 236 tons were produced during the summer months (May-August).

FCC containers, your “cleanliness guardian angels” during holiday-season on the A2 motorway

Since 2013, FCC Austria Abfall Service AG has been taking care of the waste disposal and cleanliness of almost all of the A2 motorway‘s service stations, for ASFINAG. In total, there are 266 x 1,100 litres containers and 30 x 240 litres containers (fire protection containers) provided by FCC Austria on the route of the A2 motorway.

A recent study showed that in 2017, more than 2,000 tons of waste such as; construction waste, old tires, bikes, electrical waste and even refrigerators have been left behind. This uncontrolled waste-disposal is a problem for all of the motorways in Austria, causing rising costs for the right separation and recycling to be undertaken.

You can find the FCC bins all along the A2 motorway, whether at the smaller parking spots and rest areas, or at the bigger service stations. They await your waste, to be transported and treated as a resource for further recycling.
