Liberec, Czech Republic: From Café to Mountain Trail in Minutes

Liberec, Czech Republic: From Café to Mountain Trail in Minutes

What if a waste management company became your travel guide?

In Liberec, your morning can begin in a café and end on a mountain trail.

Few cities offer such an easy transition from urban life to nature. Within minutes, you can leave the historic city centre, pass elegant cafés and architectural landmarks, and find yourself surrounded by forests, mountain ridges, and panoramic viewpoints.

Welcome to another stop on our FCC CEE Travel Guide.

Nestled between the Jizera Mountains, the Ještěd Ridge, and the Lusatian Mountains, Liberec is the unofficial capital of Northern Bohemia and one of the Czech Republic's most versatile destinations.

The city's unmistakable symbol is Ještěd, a mountain crowned by one of the most iconic buildings in Czech architecture. Designed by architect Karel Hubáček, the futuristic hotel and television tower has become a symbol of the region and one of the most significant works of post-war architecture in Europe. From its summit, visitors can admire views stretching across the Jizera Mountains, the Krkonoše Mountains, and, on clear days, even into Germany and Poland.

Back in the city centre, visitors will find one of the Czech Republic's most beautiful town halls. Inspired by Vienna's Rathaus, the Neo-Renaissance masterpiece dominates Liberec's historic square and reflects the city's prosperous industrial past.

Liberec is also a city of curiosity and discovery. The popular iQLANDIA and iQPARK science centres attract visitors of all ages with hundreds of interactive exhibits and hands-on experiments, making them among the most visited educational attractions in the country.

Nature is never far away. The city is home to the oldest zoo in the Czech Republic and one of the country's most beautiful botanical gardens. Beyond the city limits, countless hiking, cycling, skiing, and cross-country trails lead into the surrounding mountains and forests.

The city's story is closely connected to textiles. During the 19th century, Liberec became one of the most important industrial centres of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, earning the nickname "The Czech Manchester."

Hidden Gem

Most visitors head to Ještěd during the day.

Locals know that the best time comes later.

✨ Visit Ještěd at sunset, when the crowds disappear, the evening light transforms the landscape, and Northern Bohemia unfolds beneath you in golden colours.

It perfectly captures what makes Liberec special.

A city where nature doesn't begin on the outskirts.

It begins just around the corner.

FCC Connection

Liberec is also home to one of FCC's key operations in Northern Bohemia.

Since 1995, FCC has been providing comprehensive waste management services across the region. Today, approximately 150 colleagues support municipalities, businesses and industrial customers through waste collection, transport, sorting, treatment and container services.

The operation includes a modern sorting line, hazardous waste management, a waste collection yard, container rental services and bulky waste collection, helping communities and businesses manage resources responsibly.

While visitors discover mountain trails, science centres and architectural landmarks, our colleagues work behind the scenes every day to help keep the region clean, sustainable and welcoming for future generations.
