ÖBB and FCC Austria Revolutionize Railway Tunnel Cleaning with MDB02

St. Paul im Lavanttal / Vienna, 20 October 2025 – FCC Austria is proud to stand alongside ÖBB in unveiling the MDB02 Modular Drainage Flushing System Bahn—an innovative leap in tunnel maintenance technology. As a long-standing partner in this project, FCC Austria has contributed its deep expertise in industrial and specialized cleaning to help bring this solution to life.

The MDB02 system, now operational in the Granitztal Tunnel along the new Koralmbahn, marks a turning point in how tunnel drainage systems are maintained. With remote-controlled and automated capabilities, MDB02 significantly reduces the need for track closures, ensuring greater infrastructure availability for passengers and freight.

“We’ve been part of this journey from the beginning,” says Florian Scheibe, Country Manager of FCC Austria. “Our collaboration with ÖBB has been built on trust, innovation, and shared commitment to operational excellence. MDB02 is the result of years of joint development and real-world insights.”

This technology enables cleaning during ongoing rail operations, with over 2,000 meters flushed in a single pass—compared to just 150 meters previously. The system’s flexibility and efficiency are especially critical as Austria prepares to commission major infrastructure projects like the Semmering Base Tunnel.

FCC Austria remains committed to supporting ÖBB and other partners in building sustainable, high-performance infrastructure for the future.
