Lapovo, Serbia: Gateway to the Heart of Serbia

Lapovo, Serbia: Gateway to the Heart of Serbia

What if a waste management company became your travel guide?

Some places become memorable because of a single attraction.

Others, because they reveal the soul of an entire country.

Lapovo is one of them.

Located in the heart of Serbia's Šumadija region, Lapovo offers visitors a perfect base for exploring the landscapes, traditions and history that shaped the Serbian nation.

This is a land of rolling hills, vineyards, royal heritage, and warm hospitality. A place where each journey leads to another story.

One of the region's most important destinations is Topola and Oplenac, the historic centre of the Karađorđević royal dynasty. Visitors can explore the magnificent Church of St. George, famous for its spectacular mosaics, the royal mausoleum and numerous monuments connected to Karađorđe and the First Serbian Uprising.

Wine lovers will quickly discover why Šumadija has become one of Serbia's most exciting wine regions. Local wineries such as Aleksandrović Winery, Arsenijević Winery, and King's Winery (Kraljeva Vinarija) combine centuries-old traditions with modern winemaking. During harvest season, the celebrated Oplenac Harvest Festival brings vineyards and villages to life.

Nature is never far away. Hike through the forests of Rudnik Mountain, enjoy panoramic views from Bukulja Mountain, relax by Garaši Lake, or take a longer trip to the spectacular Resava Cave, the Veliki Buk (Lisine) Waterfall, and the magnificent Manasija Monastery, one of Serbia's most impressive medieval landmarks.

And no visit to Šumadija would be complete without exploring its cuisine.

Expect:

  • Traditional Serbian grilled and roasted meats
  • Sarma
  • Kajmak and local cheeses
  • Homemade pies and bread
  • Local wines
  • Šljivovica, Serbia's famous plum brandy

Insider Tips from Our Local Colleagues

Looking for an authentic Šumadija experience?

Hidden Gems

The most authentic experiences often take place far from guidebooks.

  • Visit a family-run kafana or rural household in the villages around Oplenac.
  • Taste homemade wine directly from local producers.
  • Learn how traditional šljivovica is distilled in a copper still.
  • Explore the vineyard roads around Oplenac at sunset, when the hills of Šumadija take on their most beautiful colours.

In autumn, the scent of roasted peppers, homemade ajvar, and freshly distilled rakija fills the countryside.

It is everyday life here.

And that is exactly what makes it special.

FCC Connection

The region is also home to FCC Vrbak Lapovo, which has been serving municipalities across central Serbia since 2009.

Today, 37 colleagues support communities through municipal waste collection, transportation, and responsible disposal of non-hazardous waste.

The operation uses specialised collection vehicles and controlled landfill technologies, including waste compaction, covering, and environmentally managed disposal. The facility also manages specific waste streams, including asbestos-containing materials, in accordance with applicable safety and environmental regulations.

While visitors explore royal history, vineyards, and the landscapes of Šumadija, our colleagues work behind the scenes every day to help keep the region clean, sustainable, and welcoming for future generations.
