Zabrze, Poland: Beneath the Surface of Silesia
What if a waste management company became your travel guide?
Some destinations reveal their beauty at first glance.
Others ask you to look beneath the surface.
Welcome to Zabrze, a city in the heart of Upper Silesia where industrial heritage, local traditions, and community spirit have shaped everyday life for generations.
To truly understand Zabrze, start in Zandka, the historic district where FCC's Silesian Recycling Park is located. Walking through its streets feels like stepping back into the industrial history of the region. Red-brick workers' houses, historic industrial architecture, and the fascinating Steel Houses tell the story of a time when innovation shaped not only factories but entire neighbourhoods.

The best way to explore Zabrze is to go underground.
At the famous Guido Mine, visitors descend into authentic mining workings and experience the machinery, tunnels, and working conditions that defined life in Silesia for decades. Nearby, the Queen Louise Adit offers another unique experience, including an underground boat journey through historic mining corridors.

Together, these places tell the story of a region that helped power the industrial development of modern Europe.
But Zabrze is not only about mining.
Football is deeply woven into the city's identity. A match of Górnik Zabrze, one of Poland's most historic football clubs, offers visitors a chance to experience the passion and pride that continue to unite local communities.
And no visit to Upper Silesia would be complete without discovering its cuisine.
Regional favourites include:
- Beef roulade with Silesian dumplings and red cabbage
- Traditional żur soup
- Krupniok sausage
The region's food is as rich in history as its architecture.

Hidden Gem
One of Zabrze's most unusual landmarks stands almost unnoticed near the Silesian Recycling Park.
The Steel House at Cmentarna Street was built in 1927 using prefabricated steel panels produced by the Donnersmarck foundry. From the outside it looks like an ordinary workers' house, but its exterior walls are made almost entirely of metal.
It is a remarkable example of architectural experimentation and one of those places many visitors walk past without ever realising its significance.

FCC Connection
Zabrze is also home to the Silesian Recycling Park, one of FCC Śląsk's key facilities, operating since 1999.
Today, the site serves Upper Silesia with comprehensive municipal, industrial, and hazardous waste management services. The operation includes waste sorting, bulky waste shredding, RDF production, composting, and the operation of a municipal recycling centre.
The facility also uses advanced technologies, including the BIODEGMA system, KNERR composting technology, SPALECK separation systems, RDF production lines, and IoT-supported waste management solutions.
Just as mining once powered the development of Upper Silesia, modern recycling and resource recovery help shape its sustainable future.
While visitors explore the region's industrial heritage, football culture, and local traditions, our colleagues work behind the scenes every day to help keep Upper Silesia clean, sustainable, and ready for the generations to come.
