Záhorie, Slovakia: Where Pine Forests Meet the "Záhorácka Sahara"
What if a waste management company became your travel guide?
Some destinations are famous for their landmarks.
Others are remembered for their atmosphere.
Welcome to Záhorie – a region of pine forests, sandy landscapes, local traditions, and peaceful countryside just a short drive from Bratislava. Here, nature, history, and authentic Slovak culture come together in a way that surprises many first-time visitors.
At the heart of this region lies Zohor, a small village with an ideal location between the Little Carpathians and the Morava River area. Although only about 20–25 kilometres from Bratislava, the atmosphere feels completely different. Záhorie is known for its unique dialect, folklore, pine forests, and sandy terrain—so distinctive that some locals jokingly call parts of it the "Záhorácka Sahara."
Nature lovers can explore the protected landscapes of Záhorie and the Little Carpathians, discover sandy dunes, or enjoy countless cycling and hiking routes through forests and open countryside.
The region also offers remarkable cultural and historical sites, including the ruins of Pajštún Castle, Plavecký Castle, the famous Basilica of Šaštín, Marianka—the oldest pilgrimage site in Slovakia—and the popular natural landmarks of Sandberg and Devínska Kobyla.

For active travellers, one of the most popular experiences is cycling across the border via the VysoMarch Cycling Bridge, while on hot summer days locals head to the former sand quarry in Plavecký Štvrtok for a refreshing swim.
And of course, no visit to Záhorie would be complete without local cuisine. The region is famous for Skalický trdelník, hearty Záhorácky goulash, traditional goose feasts, local wines such as Skalický rubín, homemade sausages, potato flatbreads, and regional pastries.

The region is also home to FCC Zohor, one of FCC's key facilities in Slovakia. Since 1994, the site has been providing comprehensive waste management services—from collection and transportation to recycling, mechanical-biological treatment, and landfill gas energy recovery. Today, 24 colleagues support municipalities and businesses throughout western Slovakia.
While visitors enjoy the forests, traditions, and hidden corners of Záhorie, our colleagues work behind the scenes every day to help keep this region clean, sustainable, and ready for future generations.
